Blackhearth, despite a logo that would suggest an extreme Metal, play a classic Heavy Metal and come from the Basque Country of Spain, where they were formed in 2010. Since then they have made a first full-length of the same name in 2019 (already reviewed on these pages) and this second album, released as a self-production at the beginning of December 2021, entitled "The wrath of God", equipped with an artwork that cannot help but bring to mind "Brave new world" by Iron Maiden (although the setting of the landscape is different), composed of ten pieces for about 46 minutes of total duration. The main problem of this record is the lack of compactness: there are too many different souls that are expressed in sounds that are often distant and opposed, which does not facilitate the usability of the product and risks not satisfying and substantially conquering anyone. Despite the ten-year experience of the group, even the songwriting does not fully convince, with pieces that are quite wordy, regardless of their timing (as, for example, in the case of "Nothing but dust" which, despite a duration of less than 5 minutes, seems to never end). Even the attitude of the singer is not convincing: his seamless screaming in the long run tired and there would be a need in some passages for greater expressiveness and attention to melodies. Despite all these problems, it is not difficult to listen to this record, even in the awareness that we could undoubtedly do more; it is like the classic school situation of the student who has excellent potential, but does not commit himself and limits himself to doing the "homework" to get closer to sufficiency, without ever really demonstrating what he would be able to do. If all the pieces, for example, had been at the level of the title-track (embellished by the presence of the guest Tim "Ripper" Owens) or the excellent "Rotten to the core" (which has nothing to do with the homonymous overkill song), but also of the slow concluding "Banished forever" (in which the singer finally does not scream, but proves expressive) we would be talking about a great record ... but unfortunately this was not the case. "The wrath of God", in fact, gives a glimpse of good potential that Blackhearth seems not to have fully expressed, thus not reaching the sufficiency. Hopefully for a better next record, the qualities to do it are not lacking! - All Around Metal
