Sometimes, in the dying months of the year, as the light dwindles away and the days become shorter and colder, you ask yourself, is there any better time for melodic death metal? Winter Nights don’t think so and following their self-titled 2020 album, the New York band are back with their latest EP ‘Sky Burial’.

What Winter Nights offer with ‘Sky Burial’ is a cold, grim continuation of the melodic death sound that they placed down on that self-titled album. Yet, ‘Sky Burial’ never feels like the leftovers or odds and sods of unfinished songs or tracks that ‘weren’t good enough for the album’, instead, ‘Sky Burial’ has all the hallmarks of a creative pot that is bubbling over having the interest of ‘and a little bit more’. This continuation of the sound does mean that ‘Sky Burial’ has all the enjoyability of Amon Amarth but without the Viking trope whilst also touching base with Kalmah and Sentenced with just enough blackened edges to make fans of Behemoth look up from their phones and take a glance over.

There isn’t anything here which the listener has not heard already, if you’ve heard melodic death metal, then you know exactly what Winter Nights are offering with ‘Sky Burial’, but if you loved the last Winter Nights album, then ‘Sky Burial’ is the perfect addition to your collection. - Metal Digest

Winter Nights is a four-piece melodic death metal band emanating from Brooklyn, New York in Winter of 2007. The sound and lyrical themes of their music portray loss, pain, grievance and darkness. Guitar driven melodies evoke visceral reactions to the mythic end of the world. They are an integral part of the thriving New York metal scene. As of 2021, their formation consists of dueling guitar brothers Jeremy and Efrain Farfan, bassist Martin Tune and drummer James Yarusinsky.
