Greece can certainly be described as a stronghold of heavy metal. With Gus G. aka Kostas Karamitroudis (Firewind, ex-Ozzy Osbourne), one of the world's best guitarists comes from this southeastern European state. But the country also has a lot to offer in terms of breadth. Bands like Enemy of Reality, Septic Flesh, Fallen Arise, Rotting Christ, Nightrage or Planet of Zeus come to mind. And many many many more. Now a promo for rascal Whack's new album fluttered into my house. The Heavy Rock Outfit from the capital Athens was founded in 2013. Two years later, the debut "Gameroller" was released. "Maliveni" is obviously the successor after six years. The word Maliveni, means "cedar forest" and is an area located in the suburbs of the city of Athens.
Rascal Whack 1Classic riffs with stoner impact. A singer I had to get used to. After I have this acclimatization behind me, I like the singing exceptionally well. "Carved Ignorance" is quietly laid out, with deep bass tones and a magnificent solo of the distorted guitar. A good subwoofer is essential for enjoying the music. And this continues seamlessly with "Raging Groove". The song title is concept. The sound literally grooves out of the speakers. This heavy side with frying guitars in the mid-tempo range continues later. But the individual songs never get boring. Whether "Hallucination", "Not Enough" or "Pennies From Heaven", no two song structures are the same. In between, some speed is recorded ("Slipping Away") or a bass line is interspersed ("The Fly").
The sound on "Maliveni" is really fat. Just as you would expect from a heavy rock or stoner album. And the Greeks will not be disturbed. They consistently explore the mid-tempo area with their songs. An album that you can listen to several times and discover something new with almost every run. - Dr. Rainer Kerber
Rascal Whack, is a five-member Heavy Rock band from Athens that was created in 2013. Their new album is called Maliveni and through it they redefine themselves and tell us a new story.
Maliveni was released on June 24th and includes 8 compositions. Although they remain faithful to the heavy rock genre that they serve & prefer, the grunge, stoner & heavy metal references are very intense in every song. That creates a very familiar and comfortable – almost old fashioned - atmosphere for the listener, however they carry a unique aesthetic and sensitivity.
The word Maliveni, means «cedar-forest» and is an area that literally exists in the suburbs of the city of Athens. The album describes the arrogant expansion of the city, its suffocating character and the effect that has on people, constantly asks for more and gives less and less. Maliveni is the antithesis of this chaos. The return to the roots, the aim to pay attention to our inner self as human beings, the need to live authentically, away from supposed patterns and idols.
This is Maliveni. The escape, the sacred place of redefining and distancing oneself from ignorance and deception.
