It’s difficult to know where to start when talking about Vrykolakas. They formed as a Black Metal duo in 1991, released 1 tantalizing demo EP, showcasing almost stoner-like guitar tonality playing contemporary Black Death Metal, then promptly disappeared until 1999, returning as a 3-piece with a new, more traditional Death Metal sound, increasing their production value throughout the century so far, culminating in their newest release, ‘Brings Chaos…’.
Objectively, they’re talented guys with a deep understanding of what’s popular in the death metal community; and yet this album is unlikely to generate new listeners to the genre. If someone didn’t like Death Metal before, this album will not change that. However, if you’ve got a Carcass tattoo on full show, you’ll probably enjoy this enormously.
Overall, this is an album that will only appeal to an exact group of people. A bumper offering of traditional death metal, that comes with clear intent to do exactly what’s expected of it. - Metal Digest
