Description
My Big Green Egg has been out of commission with a cracked shell, and today it came back. I bought this large Egg about 18 years ago, and after the repair it feels like a brand new unit.
The tech walks me through everything that changed: a new gasket so the lid seals properly, bigger handles, and a new hinge that lifts the dome like a pulley instead of slamming it. He also shows me why to keep the daisy wheel turned to the back so you don't knock your settings every time you open the lid (and stop burning yourself on it).
Then he spots something I never thought about. The Egg weighs close to 200 pounds and the board it sits on has no support in the middle, so the table is already flexing. New job for Billy: a couple of braces underneath.
We also get into marine grade epoxy for an outdoor table that is a month old and already covered in olive oil and butter, what a large Big Green Egg cost back then versus now, and the newer dome with the sliding vent and a rain cap for those of us who cook outside in all weather.
