As far back as a century ago, in film’s infancy, attempts at grand spectacle were already being made, and Hollywood has never stopped trying to improve its capacity to blow our minds. But it was also discovered early on that going straight for the fear center was just as effective, and often cheaper, than giving the audience visions of the fantastic.
