Roots of the Old Oak release their demo on Cassette, “Blot” is a great introduction limited to 100 pieces.
In December 2021, practising Pagans (Northern European Heathenism) and veterans of the UK Black/Death Metal scene, Pete Rowland and Stuart R Brogan decided to make music once again after twenty years away from their respective instruments. The idea was simple: to create a Blot (ritual) in musical form as a tonic for the past two years of global, not to mention, personal uncertainty and anxiety.
In February 2022, once ideas had been agreed upon, Roots of the Old Oak headed into the Welsh wilderness and the much respected Foel Studios. Behind the desk is Chris Fielding, engineering mastermind and bassist from caveman Doom warriors, Conan. For three days Roots of the Old Oak focused on the short demo, each song bringing a particular objective to the overall theme. What’s more, the energy from the secluded location and furious storms battering the studio made it seem as if the Pagan Gods themselves approved of their endeavour. This ended in the recording of 3 songs and an intro, together being the demo titled “Blot”.
Despite the initial intention of Roots of the Old Oak being a studio project, the name began to spread within the metal and Pagan communities, so it was decided to contact a very small number of labels to see if any were interested. As it happens, Hammerheart Records was, and the rest is history.
In the present, Roots of the Old Oak are now hard at work writing their debut album, the theme of which is very much in the same vein as Blot, but on a grander scale all while staying strong to their loves of early 90’s Death and Doom Metal. The key words: heavy and atmospheric.
