UK gothic metal legends Paradise Lost have officially announced their highly anticipated 17th studio album, Ascension , set for release on September 19th via Nuclear Blast Records . This marks the band’s first new full-length in five years since 2020’s critically acclaimed Obsidian .

Produced by guitarist Gregor Mackintosh and mixed/mastered by Lawrence Mackrory , Ascension finds Paradise Lost at their most potent — a bleak, emotionally crushing synthesis of gothic, doom, and death metal that reaffirms their legendary status over a 35+ year career.

The album’s cover artwork features The Court of Death (1870–1902) by famed British painter George Frederic Watts , a haunting piece housed in London’s Tate Gallery. The painting shows Death enthroned and surrounded by figures representing Silence and Mystery, highlighting themes of powerlessness and inevitable fate — perfectly mirroring the album’s despair-laden sonic landscape.

First Single and Video: “Silence Like The Grave”

To accompany the announcement, Paradise Lost have released the first single from the album, “Silence Like The Grave” , along with a stunning official music video. A brooding and ominous track, it offers a chilling glimpse into Ascension ’s emotionally charged and atmospherically dense universe.
