The story behind the two murders that were blamed on the band Slipknot Podcast on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-rock-n-roll-true-stories-podcast/id1876614383 My second YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@RockNRollTrueStories2 In this rock and metal true-crime story, we look at two separate crimes that dragged Slipknot, Corey Taylor, “Disasterpiece,” and the band’s masked image into a media firestorm. In 2003, Jason Lamar Harris and Amber Rose Riley were convicted in the murder of their friend Terry Ray Taylor in San Bernardino, California. Prosecutors alleged the pair had listened to Slipknot’s Iowa track “Disasterpiece” before and after the killing, while news coverage focused heavily on the song’s violent lyrics. Then, in 2008, Slipknot’s name was pulled into another tragedy thousands of miles away. South African student Morné Harmse carried out a deadly school attack while wearing a homemade mask reported to resemble those worn by Slipknot. The case sparked sensational headlines, claims about “Satanic” music, and renewed questions about whether aggressive metal, horror imagery, and controversial lyrics can be blamed for real-world violence. Corey Taylor responded publicly, condemning the attack while rejecting the idea that Slipknot’s music encouraged anyone to hurt another person. The band became an easy scapegoat in a familiar moral panic—much like Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Marilyn Manson, and other artists accused of influencing crimes committed by disturbed individuals. This is the disturbing story of Slipknot, the “Disasterpiece” murder case, the Morné Harmse samurai sword attack, and the debate over heavy metal, artistic freedom, media hysteria, and personal responsibility. Was Slipknot’s music a genuine influence—or were the band’s masks, lyrics, and reputation simply an easy explanation for crimes nobody wanted to understand?
