In 2002, Dave Mustaine was told something no guitarist wants to hear: he might never play guitar again.
The Megadeth founder had survived being fired from Metallica, addiction, public feuds, brutal touring schedules, lineup collapses, and decades of pressure. But the incident that nearly ended his career was not a stage accident or a tour-bus disaster. It happened after Mustaine fell asleep in an awkward position with his left arm draped over a chair.
The pressure damaged his radial nerve, leaving Mustaine’s left arm and fretting hand severely impaired. He reportedly could not even make a fist. For the guitarist behind “Holy Wars... The Punishment Due,” “Hangar 18,” “Peace Sells,” “Tornado of Souls,” and “Symphony of Destruction,” it was more than an injury—it threatened the future of Megadeth itself.
On April 3, 2002, Mustaine announced that Megadeth was disbanding. Doctors believed recovery could take roughly a year, and there was no certainty that he would ever regain the speed, coordination, strength, or precision needed to play Megadeth’s demanding music again.
But Mustaine refused to accept that ending.
This video explores the freak injury that nearly destroyed Dave Mustaine’s guitar career, the painful rehabilitation process that followed, and how he fought to rebuild his arm, hand strength, and technique from the ground up. From physical therapy and electrical stimulation to weight training and guitar lessons, Mustaine faced the humiliating task of relearning movements that had once been automatic.
By 2004, he was back with The System Has Failed—an album that marked Megadeth’s return after fans believed the band was finished. The record also brought original guitarist Chris Poland back into the Megadeth world for the first time since the 1980s.
We also look at Mustaine’s later physical struggles, including serious neck and spinal problems, and why his eventual decision to conclude Megadeth has carried extra weight. Dave Mustaine’s story is not simply another rock-and-roll comeback. It is the story of a musician whose identity was built around playing guitar—and who had to fight to earn that ability back.
