Travis Barker survived one of the most terrifying plane crashes in rock history—but for him, the nightmare did not end when he escaped the burning wreckage.
On September 19, 2008, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and DJ AM—real name Adam Goldstein—were leaving a show in South Carolina when their Learjet 60 crashed during takeoff. The plane burst into flames, killing four people: pilots Sarah Lemmon and James Bland, Barker’s assistant Chris Baker, and his close friend and security guard Charles “Che” Still. Against impossible odds, Travis Barker and DJ AM escaped alive.
But surviving the crash was only the beginning.
Travis Barker suffered severe burns over much of his body, endured multiple surgeries and skin grafts, and faced a long, painful recovery. He also dealt with unimaginable grief, survivor’s guilt, PTSD, nightmares, flashbacks, and a crippling fear of flying. For years, the Blink-182 drummer could not get on a plane—and even seeing one in the sky could trigger panic.
The crash also transformed Barker’s relationship with drugs. He has said the experience became a brutal wake-up call that forced him to confront his substance abuse and pursue sobriety. But while Travis was trying to rebuild his life, the one person who truly understood his trauma was DJ AM—the only other survivor of the crash.
Barker and Goldstein had formed a unique bond after escaping the fire together. They were creative partners, close friends, and the only two people who knew exactly what it felt like to survive that night. But less than a year after the crash, tragedy struck again.
On August 28, 2009, DJ AM was found dead in his New York apartment at just 36 years old. His death was later ruled an accidental overdose involving cocaine and prescription drugs. For Travis Barker, losing Adam Goldstein was like surviving a second crash. He had lost not only a friend, but the only other person who had shared the same unimaginable experience.
This is the full story of Travis Barker’s plane crash, the loss of DJ AM, and the long road through trauma, grief, sobriety, and recovery. We look at the deadly 2008 Learjet crash, Barker’s painful hospital recovery, his battle with PTSD and survivor’s guilt, DJ AM’s tragic death, the impact on Blink-182, and how Travis eventually found the strength to fly again nearly 13 years later.
Was Travis Barker’s recovery one of the most powerful stories of resilience in rock? And how differently do you view DJ AM’s story knowing what both men went through after that crash?
