» Chris Cornell was found dead May 18 in Detroit.
His death has come as a huge shock to fans the world over, not least because the band played a gig just hours before his death.
The 52-year-old performed at the Rock City venue the Fox Theatre, tweeting about his excitement for the show just shortly before the performance.
The rocker performed fan favourites Rusty Cage, Spoonman and Outshined at the sold out gig, part of their tour of the States which still had six dates left.
Cornell died suddenly in the hours following the gig, although his death is unexplained.
In a statement to The Associated Press, his representative Brian Bumbery said the singer died Wednesday night in Detroit.
Bumbery labelled the death ‘sudden and unexpected’, with the family set to work closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.
Soundgarden split in 1997 and reunited in 2010, their last record was King Animal in 2012. During their 13-year hiatus, Cornell went through a dark period and was admitted to rehab for alcohol addiction.
Although, in an interview in 2012, he said that he would have ended up there anyway.
He said: ‘It’s something that would have happened even if Soundgarden had stayed together.
‘It was a long slow slide and then a long slow recovery, but there was self-discovery too.
‘For me it was mostly alcohol – from my late teens until my late thirties.’
