The Nintendo GameCube was released in 2001 and was the first Nintendo console to use optical discs instead of cartridges. It was also the first console by Nintendo to utilize an adaptor to connect to the GameBoy Advance console for online gaming.

The development of the Gamecube began after the release of the Nintendo 64. The console was originally known as the "Nintendo Dolphin" before it was re branded as the Gamecube.
