A traditional benefit plan is generally a plan sponsored by the employer that includes a predefined package of benefits-a combination of health insurance, retirement savings in a pension or 401(k), life insurance, and disability coverage. Such plans are usually offered "one size fits all," or as a single set of benefits and coverage levels, as established by the employer. Employees may not have much of a choice of how to make the plan more tractable for their needs, and the expense would often be borne by the employer, paid on through payroll deductions by employees.
