Under Section 4(f) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 (Replaced IPC 1860 from 1st July 2024), Community Service is now officially 6th form of punishment along with - Death, Life Imprisonment, Rigorous/Simple Imprisonment, Forfeiture of Property, Fine. Definition as per Section 23 Explanation of BNSS (Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita): "Work which the Court may order a convict to perform as a form of punishment that benefits the community, for which he shall not be entitled to any remuneration." Section 303(2) BNS: Theft of property less than Rs 5000, first-time offender who returns/restores property - Most Important for Prelims! 5. Section 355 BNS: Misconduct in public by drunken person 6.
