Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore & Mahatma Gandhi. Settled among Gonds & Baigas in Central India (MP, Odisha, Chhattisgarh). Married tribal women, became Indian citizen in 1935 (1954 officially), Padma Bhushan in 1961, Sahitya Akademi Award in 1965 for autobiography "The Tribal World of Verrier Elwin". Died in 1964.

2. NATIONAL PARK THEORY / ISOLATION POLICY:
Elwin initially advocated that tribal areas should be treated as 'National Parks' - a sort of isolation where tribals could live without interference, preserve their culture, protected from outsiders, moneylenders, landlords, missionaries. He believed modern civilization would destroy tribal identity. Critics like Thakkar Bapa & GS Ghurye said this creates glass-museum specimen, denies development. GS Ghurye called tribes 'Backward Hindus' & wanted assimilation.
3. FROM ISOLATION TO INTEGRATION - INFLUENCE OF NEHRU:
Later, under influence of Jawaharlal Nehru, Elwin revised his view from Isolation to Integration. Together they formulated TRIBAL PANCHSHEEL (1958) - 5 Principles for tribal development:
i) People should develop along lines of their own genius
ii) Tribal rights in land & forests should be respected
iii) Train team of tribals themselves for administration
iv) No over-administration, work through own social institutions
v) Results judged by quality of human character, not statistics
4. ROLE IN NEFA (North East Frontier Agency - Now Arunachal Pradesh):
- Advisor to Nehru on Tribal Affairs for NE India
