RBI Increases Repo Rate to 5.50% to Tackle Inflation Concerns | Monetary Policy Explained | Vajirao & Reddy
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has increased the Repo Rate to 5.50% to control rising inflation in the economy. What does this mean for you, your loans, and the economy?
In this video, Vajirao & Reddy Institute - India's Top Potential Training Institute for IAS - explains the complete concept for UPSC Prelims & Mains Economy.
What is Repo Rate?
Repo Rate is the rate at which RBI lends money to commercial banks. When RBI increases the repo rate, borrowing becomes expensive for banks, which in turn increases loan interest rates for the public (home loan, car loan) - this reduces the money supply in the market and helps control inflation.
Why did RBI hike the rate?
1. To Tackle Inflation: Rising CPI inflation above the 4% +/- 2% tolerance band.
2. MPC Decision: As per the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting under Section 45ZB of the RBI Act.
3. Liquidity Control: To absorb excess liquidity from the system.
Impact for UPSC & Common Man:
- Loans become costly (EMI increases)
- FD rates may increase
- Inflation control, Rupee stability, Economic growth impact
