Partners for Multilateralism: India to Attend New Non-Superpower Grouping's Inaugural Session at UN | UPSC GS2
India joins new global order! External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar co-chaired the inaugural Partners for Multilateralism, International Law, Peace & Prosperity (P4M) Summit on Sept 21, 2026 on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
In this video, Vajirao & Reddy Institute explains the new grouping - as covered in The Hindu, Indian Express, PIB & ET.
🔴 WHAT IS P4M?
Partners for Multilateralism (P4M) is a non-superpower grouping of middle powers & Global South. Founded by EU (President Antonio Costa), Brazil (President Lula da Silva), Kenya (President William Ruto) & Canada (PM Mark Carney). Initial co-sponsors: India, Australia, Barbados.
It is based on Carney Doctrine - middle powers must come together to defend multilateralism, away from superpower politics of USA, Russia & China.
🔴 WHY WAS IT FORMED?
As per joint editorial in Financial Times:
- Growing dissatisfaction with US unilateralism under Trump 2.0 (trade weaponization, tariffs, Iran conflict)
- Russia-China unilateral moves & conflicts
- Erosion of UN-based system, UNSC veto paralysis
- Need for collective action on new challenges: AI governance, Climate Change, Health Security, Digital Transformation, Supply Chain Resilience, 4F Crisis - Fuel, Food, Fertiliser, Finance.
🔴 INDIA'S STAND:
Jaishankar said: "We meet at a time when the global order is under stress... Reformed Multilateralism is a must. More participative deliberations and transparent decision-making are overdue. If left unchecked, extreme competition will question the very spirit of international cooperation."
The summit is open to all regions and will push for UN Reform & UNSC Permanent Membership for Global South.
