Description
India has strengthened its position as a global leader in food safety and international food standards at the 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) held in Geneva, Switzerland. The country secured the adoption of seven India-led Codex standards, including standards for Dried Coriander Seeds and Fresh Curry Leaves, while also contributing to five additional Codex texts under its co-chairmanship. India received approval to develop a global Codex Standard for Cashew Kernels and was elected Co-Chair of the Electronic Working Group on New Food Sources and Production Systems (NFPS). These achievements reinforce India's leadership in science-based food regulation, enhance export opportunities for Indian agricultural products and spices, strengthen food safety, reduce technical barriers to trade under the WTO SPS Agreement, and boost the role of FSSAI in shaping global food governance. This is an important topic for UPSC, State PCS, SSC, and other competitive examinations.
