Why is RAINMUMBAI Important?
India's economy is heavily dependent on monsoon rainfall. Variations in rainfall patterns can impact agriculture, energy production, logistics, construction, tourism, and power sectors. RAINMUMBAI provides a structured financial mechanism to hedge against rainfall-related uncertainties.
Unlike traditional insurance products, weather derivatives offer payouts based on actual weather data rather than physical damage assessment. This results in faster settlements, reduced paperwork, and better financial planning.
The contract uses rainfall data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) located at Santacruz and Colaba in Mumbai. The product tracks deviations from Mumbai's Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall during the monsoon season.
