In January 2026, the University Grants Commission (UGC) notified the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026, to address caste-based discrimination in higher education. Introduced after Supreme Court intervention following the Rohith Vemula and Payal Tadvi cases, the regulations mandate Equal Opportunity Centres, Equity Committees, and Equity Squads in all institutions. However, concerns over constitutional validity, harassment of general category students, and absence of penalties for false complaints led to widespread opposition and a Supreme Court stay.
