Description
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Jordan on 15–16 December 2025 marked a major milestone in India–Jordan relations. This was PM Modi’s first full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan and coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. The visit was part of a three-nation tour covering Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman, highlighting India’s deepening engagement with West Asia.
India and Jordan share a relationship built on decades of mutual respect, political trust, and expanding economic cooperation. Diplomatic relations were formally established in 1950, with foundations laid even earlier in 1947. Over the years, ties have evolved into a comprehensive, multi-sectoral partnership covering trade, defence, technology, education, health, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
During the visit, PM Modi held extensive discussions with King Abdullah II of Jordan on bilateral, regional, and global issues. Both leaders strongly condemned terrorism and shared views on regional peace and stability in West Asia. A key outcome was the agreement to raise bilateral trade from nearly US$ 3 billion to US$ 5 billion within the next five years.
Five important MoUs were signed, focusing on renewable energy, water resource management, cultural cooperation, digital public infrastructure, and heritage conservation through the Petra–Ellora twinning agreement. These agreements aim to strengthen cooperation in clean energy, sustainable development, digital solutions like UPI linkage, tourism, and cultural exchange.
Economic cooperation remains a cornerstone of India–Jordan relations. India is among Jordan’s top trading partners, with major collaboration in fertilisers through joint ventures like the Jordan India Fertiliser Company (JIFCO). Defence and security cooperation has also expanded, with a shared commitment to counter-terrorism and regional stability.
The visit further reinforced cooperation in science and technology through the India–Jordan Centre of Excellence in IT, education via ITEC and ICCR scholarships, and strong people-to-people ties supported by the Indian diaspora and improved connectivity.
Overall, PM Modi’s 2025 visit gave fresh strategic, economic, and cultural momentum to India–Jordan relations, reaffirming Jordan’s role as a trusted partner in India’s West Asia policy and long-term strategic vision.
