Deepavali (Diwali) has been officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) List in December 2025, becoming India’s 16th recognised cultural element. The decision was announced at the 20th UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee meeting held at the Red Fort, New Delhi, with participation from delegates of 194 countries.
UNESCO recognised Deepavali as a living, community-driven tradition that promotes social unity, shared cultural values, intergenerational continuity, and inclusive participation across regions, religions, and communities. Celebrated on Kartik Amavasya (October–November), Deepavali symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, prosperity, hope, and new beginnings.
India nominated Deepavali for the 2024–25 cycle following extensive nationwide consultations led by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, involving artisans, farmers, religious groups, indigenous communities, transgender communities, and the Indian diaspora. Personal stories, rituals, and memories highlighted Deepavali’s deep cultural roots and evolving contemporary relevance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the recognition as an honour to India’s civilisational soul, while the Ministry of Culture emphasised that global recognition also brings responsibility to preserve and promote the festival sustainably. The inclusion strengthens India’s cultural diplomacy and enhances global awareness of its intangible heritage, while supporting livelihoods, community welfare, environmental initiatives, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Deepavali now joins other iconic Indian traditions like Yoga, Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja, Garba, and Ramlila on UNESCO’s prestigious list, reaffirming India’s rich cultural diversity and living traditions.
