Description
Bibi Zahra, a 5-year-old girl from Peshawar, had been experiencing breathlessness and chest discomfort since birth. These symptoms often made routine activities such as walking and playing difficult for her. Concerned about her ongoing health problems, her parents took her to a local hospital for an evaluation. After a detailed examination, the doctor diagnosed Zahra with Pulmonary Atresia (PA) and an interventricular septal defect, a congenital heart condition that affects the normal flow of blood through the heart. She had previously undergone PDA stent placement, followed by a Right BT shunt procedure to improve blood flow and support her heart function. Despite these interventions, further treatment was required.
Her doctor recommended open-heart surgery for a CP shunt to improve cardiac circulation and manage her condition. Without the procedure, her health could have worsened and placed her at risk of serious complications, including heart failure.
Zahra lives with her parents and siblings in a rented home in Peshawar. Her father works as a delivery rider and earns approximately PKR 17,000 per month. Their limited financial resources made it impossible to arrange the cost of Zahra’s complex heart surgery. Her family contacted Transparent Hands for assistance. After reviewing her medical and financial circumstances, her case was registered.
On July 30, 2026, Bibi Zahra was admitted to the Ittefaq Hospital in Lahore. On July 31, 2026, she underwent open-heart surgery for a CP shunt. Dr. Asim Khan expertly performed the surgery. Following the procedure, Zahra received post-operative care and remained under medical observation. As her condition improved, she was discharged in stable condition on August 4, 2026.
Bibi Zahra’s mother expressed her gratitude as follows:
“After Zahra’s first heart procedure, we hoped her health would improve, but another surgery became necessary. The cost of the surgery was beyond our family’s means. Your generosity can never be forgotten.”
Zahra is now healing well after her surgery, and her family is relieved to see her condition improving. They are deeply grateful to you and the Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF) for saving her life.
