Produced by guitarist Gregor Mackintosh and mixed/mastered by Lawrence Mackrory, Ascension finds Paradise Lost at their most potent — a bleak, emotionally crushing synthesis of gothic, doom, and death metal that reaffirms their legendary status over a 35+ year career. The album’s cover artwork features The Court of Death (1870–1902) by famed British painter George Frederic Watts, a haunting piece housed in London’s Tate Gallery.
