In March 2000, one of the most famous young men on the planet walked onstage in Los Angeles in handcuffs, escorted by a man in a "Police" shirt. He greeted the crowd in a British accent and told them it was his first time in Los Angeles. None of it was true. He wasn't British, he'd been to LA plenty of times, and he'd never spent a day in jail. For the next hour and a half, AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys was Johnny No Name.
This is the strange, funny and ultimately dark story of AJ McLean's rock alter ego. Johnny started as a jacket bought in Nashville and a fake name AJ used to check into hotels. It became a birthday benefit show at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, then a charity tour for VH1 Save the Music. Along the way, a clothing company that sold "Boycott Your Local Boy Band" T-shirts made sure "Johnny Suede" lost his name.
Johnny came with a ridiculous backstory: a false arrest, a band he met in prison, a parole officer named Uncle Marshmallow and a two-string guitar. His setlist had nothing to do with boy band pop. He opened with Stone Temple Pilots and covered Rage Against the Machine, Tonic, George Thorogood and the Commodores, backed by musicians from the Backstreet Boys' own touring band. MTV called him a "British troublemaker from Nashville." The Los Angeles Times was less sure. And the screaming fans? One of them put it perfectly: "My poster says A.J., not Johnny."
We'll look at Johnny's MTV interview with Chris Connelly, Howie Dorough crashing the encore, the rumors that AJ was leaving the Backstreet Boys, his talks with Fred Durst about a Johnny No Name album, and the nearly $100,000 the tour raised for charity. Then there's the JNN Foundation, launched with a $1 million personal donation from AJ.
But Johnny's whole gimmick was that he was always in trouble. By 2001, during the Black & Blue tour, the trouble was real. We'll cover AJ's struggles with alcohol and cocaine, the loss of his grandmother, the hotel-room blowup with Kevin Richardson, and the day the Backstreet Boys went on MTV's TRL to tell the world AJ was in rehab, using footage from VH1's Behind the Music and MTV News.
Finally, we follow AJ's long road to recovery, all the way to his 2025 solo era as Alexander James, and the one realization that changes how you see Johnny No Name.
