The Calling had one of the biggest rock songs of the early 2000s. But behind “Wherever You Will Go” was a story of lawsuits, broken partnerships, serious health problems, and a reported kidnapping that made international headlines. How did a band with such a massive breakthrough end up spending decades trying to move forward?
In this documentary, we explore the rise, disappearance, and return of The Calling, following singer Alex Band and guitarist Aaron Kamin from their early songwriting partnership to the success of their debut album, Camino Palmero. Their signature song made them recognizable around the world, but the business behind the band was much less straightforward than fans realized.
As “Wherever You Will Go” reached new audiences, arguments over money, membership, and control threatened the group’s future. Former members Billy Mohler and Nate Wood sued, while the relationship between Band and Kamin eventually broke down. Their second album, Two, featuring “Our Lives,” failed to repeat their debut’s breakthrough, and The Calling’s original run came to an end.
But Alex Band’s story didn’t stop with a band breakup. His attempt to build a solo career became tangled in professional setbacks, while a frightening diagnosis changed his life. Band later described being diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease, experiencing severe physical symptoms, and spending his resources searching for answers. Years afterward, he said doctors reconsidered that diagnosis and discussed the possibility of parkinsonism instead.
Then came the incident in Lapeer, Michigan. In August 2013, Band told police he had been abducted, beaten, and robbed after a performance. Reports described serious injuries, while questions surrounding his account became part of the coverage. This video looks at what Band reported, his response to speculation, and the lasting impact he said the ordeal had on his recovery.
Meanwhile, the dispute over The Calling’s name raised another question: who had the right to carry the band forward? We examine the trademark fight between Band and Kamin, their differing accounts of the split, and Kamin’s work as a songwriter and producer outside the group.
Through it all, listeners kept returning to the music. “Wherever You Will Go” remained the song most people associated with The Calling, even as its singer worked toward another chapter. With new collaborators, renewed ambitions, and another album, Band eventually returned to the project that had made him famous.
This is more than a familiar one-hit wonder story. It’s a look at the gap between having a hit record and maintaining a career, and how personal crises can complicate an already difficult music business.
If you remember The Calling from MTV, early 2000s radio, or the chorus of “Wherever You Will Go,” this documentary follows the people, conflicts, and setbacks behind that familiar voice.
