Tom Morello is known worldwide as the guitarist of Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Prophets of Rage, and one of rock music’s most outspoken political voices. But in 2014, Morello found himself at the center of an unexpected public battle in Seattle—not with a politician, record label, or corporate giant, but with prominent nightlife entrepreneur David Meinert.
Morello was in Seattle for a benefit connected to the push for a $15 minimum wage when he and his group reportedly had a tense encounter at The 5 Point Café, a diner owned by Meinert. What should have been a simple late-night restaurant dispute became a massive online argument about celebrity entitlement, employee rights, and who truly represented working people.
Morello publicly criticized the restaurant’s treatment of his group. Meinert fired back with a blistering response, claiming the café was full and that his staff had simply done their jobs. He positioned himself as a supporter of higher wages, paid sick leave, health benefits, and worker protections. The response went viral, and the diner’s famous marquee soon read: “Eggs Against the Machine.”
At the time, the public reaction largely favored Meinert. He had spent years building a reputation as one of Seattle’s most influential independent business owners. He was also associated with local activism, nightlife reform, artist communities, and the all-ages music space The Vera Project.
But the Morello feud became only one chapter in a far larger story.
In 2018, KUOW published reporting featuring allegations of misconduct from multiple women involving Meinert. Meinert denied allegations of assault while also publicly acknowledging that he had crossed boundaries and behaved in ways he later described as disrespectful and invasive. The reporting prompted a major backlash across Seattle’s nightlife, restaurant, music, and political communities.
Business partners distanced themselves. Artists and clients ended professional relationships. Multiple businesses announced that Meinert was no longer involved as an owner or operator. Political figures donated past campaign contributions to charity. The man once viewed as a powerful figure in Seattle’s cultural scene saw much of the empire and influence he had built disappear in public.
Years later, businesses connected to Meinert were also named in a class-action employment case involving wage-and-break claims by workers. The defendants denied wrongdoing, and the case was settled without an admission of liability.
This is the story of Tom Morello’s strange clash with David Meinert, the viral “Eggs Against the Machine” moment, Seattle’s Capitol Hill nightlife world, and the extraordinary downfall of a businessman whose public image was built around progr
