In 1998, Hole released the biggest album of their career — and their drummer wasn't on it.
Celebrity Skin went platinum, reached number nine on the Billboard 200, earned four Grammy nominations, and gave Hole their first number one on Billboard's Alternative Airplay with the title track. Courtney Love was everywhere. After years of being treated as alternative rock's most volatile band, Hole had finally crossed over into the mainstream on their own terms.
But behind that success was one of the ugliest stories of the era. Patty Schemel had been Hole's drummer since 1992. She played on Live Through This. She wrote every drum part on Celebrity Skin and played on the demos. Her name and photo are printed in the album packaging. And the drums you actually hear on that record belong to somebody else.
In this video we break down exactly how it happened: how producer Michael Beinhorn pushed for a session drummer during the final recording sessions, how Schemel described being "worn down" and "psyched out" in the studio, how Courtney Love and Eric Erlandson went along with the decision, and how Schemel walked out of the studio and quit the band feeling "betrayed."
We cover the session drummer who replaced her, Deen Castronovo, later of Journey.
The irony is impossible to miss. Celebrity Skin is an album about fame, image, beauty, envy, and exploitation — and the making of it produced exactly that. A polished record with a real musician's name on it, a stand-in in the video, and the person who wrote the parts erased from the biggest album she ever helped create.
Hole got the platinum record. Patty Schemel got the credit and nothing else
