Putting Marilyn Manson and Courtney Love on tour together sounded brilliant on paper.
In 1999, Manson and Hole launched the Beautiful Monsters tour: two controversial frontpeople, two huge names, and a co-headlining package built for headlines.
Instead, it became a disaster.
There were disputes over who went on first, production costs, ticket sales, and whether the two bands’ audiences even belonged at the same shows. Manson’s crowd wanted the gothic industrial spectacle. Hole’s audience was there for Courtney Love’s post-grunge rock world.
Then, during a Vancouver show, Love reportedly came onstage after Manson made a comment about her. She jumped onto his back, he fell, injured his thumb, and cut his set short.
Nine shows into the tour, Hole quit.
The Beautiful Monsters tour did not just end badly—it proved that two rock stars with massive personalities can create a tour too volatile to survive. Full breakdown in the long-form video.
