Height Increase Surgery: Age Limits and Possibilities
Can adults still increase their height naturally? When do growth plates close? And at what age can height increase surgery be considered?
In this video, we explain the relationship between age, growth plates, natural height growth and limb lengthening surgery, including why age alone is not the only factor considered before surgery.
Natural Height Growth & Growth Plates
Natural height increase occurs while the growth plates are still open.
Once the growth plates have fused, the long bones can no longer naturally lengthen in the same way they do during childhood and adolescence.
Growth-plate closure varies between individuals and can occur at different ages. It is therefore more accurate to assess skeletal maturity medically rather than relying only on a person's age.
When Can Height Increase Surgery Be Considered?
For adults whose growth plates have already fused, limb lengthening surgery may be an option in appropriately selected candidates.
However, there is no single age at which the procedure automatically becomes safe or unsafe.
Doctors consider factors such as:
✅ Overall physical fitness
✅ Bone health and healing potential
✅ Joint condition and mobility
✅ Muscle and soft-tissue condition
✅ Existing medical conditions
✅ Previous surgeries or injuries
✅ Ability to undergo rehabilitation
✅ Psychological readiness and realistic expectations
Can Someone Have Surgery in Their 40s or 50s?
Age does not automatically rule out every adult candidate.
We discuss cases where patients in their 40s and 50s have considered or undergone height increase surgery after appropriate medical evaluation.
We also share a successful patient case at 52 years of age, demonstrating why individual assessment can be more meaningful than simply applying a fixed age cutoff.
What About Patients Over 60?
For older candidates, the potential risks and recovery demands become increasingly important.
At 60–65+, we may decline patients when the expected surgical and rehabilitation risks are considered too high.
This is not simply about the number on the birth certificate. It is about whether the patient's bone health, physical condition, joint function, healing capacity and ability to complete rehabilitation make the procedure appropriate.
What About Women?
For female patients, suitability is similarly evaluated on an individual basis.
Candidates in their 40s may still be considered when their overall fitness and clinical evaluation are appropriate, while older candidates may face greater limitations depending on their health and recovery capacity.
The Most Important Point
There is no universal "maximum age" for limb lengthening surgery.
A patient's chronological age is only one part of the assessment.
Before considering height increase surgery, a proper medical evaluation is necessary to determine whether the procedure is appropriate and what risks may be involved.
If you are researching height increase surgery, limb lengthening, growth plates or adult height increase, understanding these factors is an important first step.

Age ranges discussed in this video are general information, not universal medical cutoffs. Growth-plate closure and surgical suitability vary between individuals and require appropriate medical evaluation.
