Asphyxium Zine (formerly Autoeroticasphyxium) emerged in print in 1997, spawned by unwavering passion for underground music. Its goal is to help get exposure for entertainment that’s too left field or cutting edge for mainstream consumption. Asphyxium’s earliest issues supported underground metal, punk, hardcore and alternative rock. The zine went exclusively online in 2015, having gradually expanded into goth, crust, grindcore/goregrind, doom/sludge/stoner rock, horror/occult rock, psychobilly, electronic, ambient, industrial, experimental, synthpop, darkwave and world. The zine has further expanded into performance art, independent radio and podcasts, alt modeling, photography, art, poetry and fiction, the occult, the paranormal and witchcraft. Winston Blakely, Alex Kautz, Frank Garcia, M Teresa Clayton, Alison Stone and Sky Claudette are a few of the artists and writers who have lent their talents. Asphyxium’s worldwide readership includes readers from the U.S., the U.K., Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Netherlands, Italy, France, Germany, Finland, Greece, Korea, Indonesia, Uruguay, Ukraine, Russia and Australia. The latest interviews posted at Autoeroticasphyxium’s blog are Abysmal Domination from Colombia and Sun Descends Black from the U.S. Abysmal Domination formed in 2018 and are preparing to release their debut album "Cryptica Manipulación Omnipresente" in December. The band’s guitarist Alexander Olaya Ojeda says the Colombian death metal scene has become unique since its formative years. The bands’ sound, technique and performances have grown into “ultra metal” which reflects the social and economic conditions of Colombia. Sun Descends Black is part of the death metal scene in Little Rock, Arkansas which guitarist Dustin Weddle describes as being extremely small (the doom and sludge scene has always been much more prominent there). He says the underground in Arkansas is a collective community where fans and venue owners all know one another. He also mentions an all-local death metal show that is scheduled to happen in November. Both interviews are linked below.

Day Of The Beast is a band from Dunkirk, France influenced by first wave black and death metal (Hellhammer, Venom, Bathory etc). The band formed in May-July 2017 and released their debut EP “First Invocation” in December 2018. If you like Witchery and The Crown you’ll want to listen to it since it has the sacrilegious energy of those bands in the 1990s. Musically inspired by horror films and satanic books, Day Of The Beast explore the darker side of humanity much like Celtic Frost on “Morbid Tales.” “Perversion de Sade,” their ode to author and philosopher Donatien Alphonse François (aka Marquis de Sade) was written after they researched his work and decided it fits their ideas. The band is working on material for a full length album which will continue the path they forged with the EP. A review of “First Invocation” and the band’s interview (a first time ever collaboration with Dave Wolff and reviewer Kelly Tee) are linked below.

Salman Aziz is an accomplished poet, author, writer, indie artist and indie filmmaker from Bangladesh whose second film “Lost in the Black Hole” was the first of its kind to be made in his home country and officially selected to screen at several international film festivals. Aziz, who directed, filmed, edited, sound mixed and appeared in the film, describes “Lost in the Black Hole” as dark, symbolic, metaphoric with a multidimensional perspective. The film has yet to be released worldwide, but Aziz is writing a new non-fiction novel “Infamous Words of Akash” to be published soon, which will include his writings about social and human issues.

Brad Wilson is a graphic artist, photographer and clothing designer from Center Point, Alabama who grew up with old B horror and science fiction movies, slasher films from the 1980s and 90s and Robert Ripley (Believe It Or Not). Other movies and television programs that left an impression on him are Halloween, Friday the 13th, Return of the Living Dead and the classic Twilight Zone series, and newer films like 2017’s Happy Death Day. Wilson’s work is heavily inspired by nostalgia, retaining the sense of wonder experienced from childhood. His work speaks to the sense of nostalgia and escapism in people, especially in the pre-9/11 world. His interview includes links to his community pages on Facebook and Redbubble.

Tibbie Skye West is the former front woman of the South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania punk band GASH. Her first interview in which she discusses that band and their impact on punk appeared on Autoeroticasphyxium’s blog in September 2015. Since then GASH disbanded and West went on to tour the U.S. with Reagan Youth and join Madame St. Beatrice’s new band as guitarist. Madame St. Beatrice is loosely described as being “feminist fronted rock” though West would prefer a band to be a band without separation. West has also taken up painting and has some of her work posted with the interview. See it at the link below:

Mark Tizard from Ilkeston, United Kingdom is a dark, surreal artist who takes inspiration from ancient legends and describes his work as “esoteric mythology”. His Facebook group The Hidden Gallery is just starting out and much of his work can be viewed there. Tizard is also the cover artist for Steven Michael Pape ’s new publication “Inner Voices: 3 AM Poems” which is now available for purchase via Amazon and other internet outlets. Most of what influences Tizard is his extensive study of ancient Sumerian civilization and culture; he cites its contributions to modern agriculture, mathematics, language and science. English folklore and legend also plays a part in inspiring Tizard; Patricia Crowther and Julian Cope are two authors he recommends if you’re interested in learning about old English folk tales. Linke to The Hidden Gallery and his pages on Redbubble, Instagram and Burningark are included in the interview linked below.

Long Island’s 25th Mission are middle aged and still metal fans, and assert the fondness for their craft is no casual adolescent phase. They are accountants, students, LIRR workers and landscapers but haven’t lost their edge for classic metal, craft beer, Jack Daniels and Johnny Walker. They don’t seek to revolutionize the genre, only to embody the spirit that spawned “Kill ‘em All”, “Peace Sells”, “Piece of Mind”, “Screaming for Vengeance”, “Hail to England”, “Paranoid”, “Appetite for Destruction” and “Led Zeppelin II.” The 80s are gone but the band remains to keep the memory alive. 25th Mission is named after a term that originated in the days of World War II. In those days an airman’s terms of service was defined by how many missions they completed and was allowed to return home to their families after twenty-five. But most airmen could expect to complete only fourteen missions before being killed. As fans of the same artists from the era of classic metal, the band play what they call "Retro-Metal" and describe it as being like a lost album from 1987 that you completely missed.

The Yorkshire, United Kingdom black metal band Aubzagl released their debut EP “Eilífa Kuldinn” (Icelandic for “eternal cold”) on June 2019. Available in digital and streaming, it has received support from independent zines and net radio outlets, including Head-Banger Reviews, Black Metal Daily, Musipedia Of Metal and The Autopsy Report rock & metal radio show. Following their 2018 demo “Oath of Blood”, “Eilífa Kuldinn” is comprised of songs that were written and composed over a three year period. The lyrics, penned by the band’s lead vocalist, center on the old gods, sacrilege, esoteric subjects and mental health related topics. New material is already being put together for another release, and Aubzagl plan to expand their creativity further into the territory of musical strangeness.

Waukegan, Illinois’ (USA) Masada has been around since the days of old school thrash metal. Their earliest performances were compared to riots, due as much to their fans as to the band. Masada has opened for Death, Nuclear Assault, Sick Of It All, Obituary and Zoetrope. Linked to their interview are videos of their early shows. They released a couple of demos and a split compilation with a handful of bands before parting company in 1989/1990. Masada reformed in the early 2010s and are currently releasing new material. Musically and lyrically the band continues to develop, as their next album is planned to be a conceptual narrative. Two singles have been released in advance and guitarist Paul Quinn explains their storylines.

Jawzael is an Iranian black metal band that cannot be classified as melodic, atmospheric, symphonic or extreme, though each of those elements are part of them. You can consider them cosmic black metal since they lyrically draw from cosmology, astronomy, the occult, Sumerian history and Sumerian mythology. Musically they reflect these subjects and their interpretation of life and death, and their approach to songwriting is as intellectual as it is haunting and disturbing. The band relies heavily on language to create a world based on ancient beliefs and legends. If you listen to their 2019 full length “Nibiri” after reading the interview done with Mehrzad it will have a profound effect on your psyche.

This is the fourth interview I did with UK based poet Steven Michael Pape since Autoeroticasphyxium became a web zine in 2014-15. Pape’s latest anthology “Inner Voices: 3AM Poems” is due out toward the end of July. “Inner Voices” will differ from his previous collections of poems, as his writings are more of a personal nature. Pape has penned about seventy poems in all, edited by Rose Terranova Cirigliano who is publishing through her independent company Rose Books. Cover art is by Mark Tizard whose work is posted at The Hidden Gallery on Facebook. “Inner Voices” is out via Amazon on July 25. Below are links to Pape’s interview promoting his new book and his previous interviews:

Graveyard formed in Long Island in 1991, taking a cue from the growing underground popularity of grindcore to create something they term “political death noise.” Their latest full length OPUS V must be heard to be believed, as it’s less like an album and more like a psycho drama depicting a coming socio-political apocalypse thirty years in the making and coming to a town near you. Inspired by the writings of George Orwell and the social climate in the wake of the presidential election of 2017, OPUS V challenges media spin, political euphemisms and the mass dumbing down of American culture which is at an all time high, For a look into the band’s views on these topics and the making of the album read the interview here:

Israeli musician Vlad Shusterman began exploring his influences in the 2000s playing goth metal, indie pop and big beat techno with several local unsigned bands. Expanding to black metal and ambient bass soon after, he started combining all his influences with Ghost Bike. Ghost Bike released several EPs and full lengths from 2009 to 2019, each new release more ambitious and experimental. During this time Shusterman started the folk noir/post-metal project Cruel Wonders with Tamar Singer (Zeresh, Necromishka) who previously lent her vocals to Ghost Bike. Cruel Wonders’debut Gentle Ocean was released March 2017 and has elements of acoustic doom, cinematic metal, darkwave, neofolk, post-industrial, gloomgaze and post-metal. Cruel Wonders is working on a new EP to be released independently.

Oort Smog is a two-member progressive rock project comprised of Patrick Shiroishi and Mark Kimbrell, of the Los Angeles quintet Upsilon Acrux. Both the band and the project play what is termed “brutal prog,” complex instrumental progressive rock with more intensity and passion than usual. The difference is that Oort Smog is strictly a saxophone/drum ensemble. The idea of starting Oort Smog was to create music that hadn’t been done by prog-rock bands, as opposed to placing emphasis solely on perfection and hero worship. Shirioshi and Kimbrell listen to progressive rock, progressive metal and black metal, sharing the ambition of Death, Meshuggah, Deathspell Omega and Mayhem of expanding music beyond its reach. The band was also heavily inspired by Sam Hillmer from Z's solo project, and John Coltrane and Rashied Ali's sax-drum duo record Interstellar Space. Two new interviews posted at Autoeroticasphyxium this month, arranged with the help of Goddess Rosemary of Temple House Sahjaza: Brittany Sherwood Loka of The Vampire Court of Northern Wisconsin and Emily Walker of The Vampire Court of the Live Oak. Rosemary has been a supporter of AEA since 2013 and recommended many musicians and artists to be spotlighted. Loka is involved in several projects connected to Sahjaza, including the annual event Gothic Renfair. Walker describes her ability to “awaken” potential vampires she meets in everyday life and help set them on their path. If interested in reading about these two and learning more about vampires, the occult and Wicca, their interviews are linked below:

Tatius Wolff is an alternative metal project hailing from Australia, the brainchild of musician Stephen Wolff (ex-Oblique Visions). Many years in the making, this project first saw the light of day in 2017 with the release of the debut single Thumbscrews. The influences brought into this single were progressive rock, djent and early 90s death metal. For the debut full length to be released in 2019, Stephen Wolff is drawing on his inspiration from Type O Negative, Tool, Deftones and Nine Inch Nails. Mixing atmosphere, gothic themes and heavy guitars is a bold testament to the idea that age has no bearing on desire to create a new and inventive musical statement from one’s own imagination. To read about his vision you can visit this link: http://aeafanzine.blogspot.com/2019/05/interview-with-stephan-wolff-of-tatius.html

Silvertonguedevil from Dallas, Texas, USA have a wide range of influences and a sound that has evolved over the course of two demos, a compilation release and two full length albums. Referring to themselves as a metal band without over-classifying their music is likely a good idea, a reminder that metal in and of itself still entails breaking rules and posing challenges. You can listen to them for yourself at their social media sites, check out their “brother” band Acoustic Devil and read about how their songs are constructed at the following link.
