Ever wondered how Odoo turns a basic salary into the final amount on a payslip? It’s not magic. It’s built from salary rules, and once you understand how they work, payroll setup becomes much easier. In this video, I walk you through salary rules in Odoo 20 in plain, simple language, so you can see exactly how each number on a payslip is calculated.
We start with the big picture, looking at how categories group similar pay items such as Basic, Allowance and Deduction, and why their codes matter. Then we look at salary rule parameters, the fixed numbers like tax amounts that rules use, and how their history keeps old payslips correct when values change. After that, we open a real salary rule, Basic Salary, and explain its code, sequence and pay structure.
The heart of the video is the two questions every rule asks. First, should this rule run at all? That’s the condition, which can be Always Present, Input Value, Domain or Python Expression. Second, how much should it pay? That’s the amount type, which can be a percentage, an input value, a fixed amount or a Python formula. We also look at why Basic Salary uses a formula, and how to check that its amount appears correctly on a payslip.
This video is useful for HR staff, payroll officers, and business owners who want to understand what’s happening behind each payslip, and anyone setting up payroll in Odoo for the first time.
