Description
In this PostgreSQL R&D session, we'll compile PostgreSQL 18 from the REL_18_STABLE branch and set up an independent database environment alongside any existing PostgreSQL installation.
What You'll Learn in This Video
Create a dedicated workspace for PostgreSQL source code.
Clone the official PostgreSQL GitHub repository.
Configure the build using ./configure.
Understand --prefix, --enable-cassert, and --enable-debug.
Compile PostgreSQL using make and parallel processing.
Install the compiled binaries in a custom directory.
Initialize a new database cluster using initdb.
Check existing PostgreSQL clusters using pg_lsclusters.
Start your custom PostgreSQL server on a separate port using pg_ctl.
Connect to your newly compiled server using psql.
Prerequisites: Install PostgreSQL Build Dependencies
Before compiling PostgreSQL from source, we need to install the required development tools and libraries.
1. Update the package list
sudo apt update
2. Install essential build tools
sudo apt install -y build-essential
3. Install PostgreSQL build dependencies
sudo apt install -y \
flex \
bison \
libreadline-dev \
zlib1g-dev \
libssl-dev \
libxml2-dev \
libxslt1-dev \
libzstd-dev \
liblz4-dev \
pkg-config
These packages provide the compiler toolchain, parser generators, and development libraries required for PostgreSQL compilation with support for the corresponding optional features.
4. Verify the compiler and build tools
gcc --version
cc --version
make --version
These commands verify that GCC, the C compiler, and Make are available before proceeding with the PostgreSQL source code configuration and compilation.
Note: Some libraries enable optional PostgreSQL features. The exact dependencies required depend on your PostgreSQL version and the build options you choose.
This setup will help you get started with debugging PostgreSQL, modifying its source code, and exploring how different database components work internally.
