FILMMAKER BIO:
Jason Tostevin, New Albany, Ohio
2. - How long have you been making movies?
Eight years. Writing professionally and to tell stories for 30.
3. - Favorite horror film?
My favorite this year is The Blackcoat's Daughter. I think Aja's Hills Have Eyes remake is almost perfectly structured. Hellraiser's up there on the all-time list.
4. - Who is a filmmaker you admire?
Carpenter, Craven and Romero for building our horror foundation. Ricky Bates, Jason Eisener and Jason Trost for pushing genre and holding the door open between indie and studio with just their great craft and will.
5. - Why did you get into making horror movies?
Horror has always been my favorite part of the human experience to explore, personally and as a creator. Fear is primal. It's so fundamental to our everyday experience. We spend all day, every day a little scared -- of being embarrassed, of not fitting in, of losing something important, of finding ourselves in the unknown, of being victims of the chaos in the world. People feel great horror in their chests, like the beat of a drum.
6. - If you could remake any horror movie, which would it be?
I'd love to get an installment in the Return of the Living Dead series. That O'Bannon pitch-black humor intermingled with genuinely terrifying stuff is so fun and engaging and is so hard to do right. It'd be a great challenge. I'd really like to remake Bloodsport as a horror movie.
7. - Do you have anything new you'd like to promote or do you have anything in development currently?
Nightmares Film Festival has fast become one of the most looked-to and respected horror festivals in the world. We created it to promote and inspire #BetterHorror, and the feedback so far is, it's happening. I'd love to have fellow horror fans and filmmakers stop by and explore it.
8. - What is it about WOD that appealed to you when you joined its community?
The quality of the content, the integrity of Tony, the founder, the connection to an iconic horror brand in Bloody Disgusting, and the shared vision between WOD and our festival, Nightmares, to elevate horror and create opportunities for more people to see more of the best work out there.
