What are naltrexone tablets, and how are they used in addiction treatment?
In this educational video, Dr. Nimesh G. Desai explains naltrexone tablets, how naltrexone works in the brain, and how this medication can support the treatment of alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder.
What is naltrexone?
Naltrexone is a medication that blocks opioid receptors in the brain. It is used as part of treatment for alcohol use disorder and, in appropriate circumstances, opioid use disorder.
How does naltrexone work?
- Naltrexone for alcohol addiction: It can help reduce alcohol cravings and the rewarding effects of drinking.
- Naltrexone for opioid use disorder: It blocks the effects of opioid drugs and may help prevent a return to opioid use.
- Naltrexone tablets and recovery: Medication may form part of a comprehensive treatment plan alongside medical supervision, psychological support and ongoing recovery care.
Important precautions before taking naltrexone
Naltrexone is a prescription medication and is not suitable for everyone. A medical professional must assess the person's opioid use history and other health factors before treatment. Taking naltrexone while opioids remain in the body can trigger sudden, severe withdrawal. It can also affect how opioid pain medicines work.
Naltrexone should only be taken under appropriate medical supervision. It is not a standalone cure for addiction, and treatment must be individualised.
