The Darkest Planet is the third album by Mexico’s Fugatta, a band that plays fantasy-based symphonic power metal of the European variety, specifically the kind you hear from Italian and French bands. It is an album long on speed and neoclassical guitar work with high, clear vocals and plenty of sweep and grandeur. "The Freedom of My Spirit" is an example of Fugatta putting the pedal to the metal and firing off guitar and keyboard runs one atop the next but there are slower songs, too. "Lethal Virus" has a somber, introspective vibe and pacing that reminded me of Helloween’s "A Tale that Wasn’t Right". There’s an almost cinematic feel to The Darkest Planet and, along with a sharp, precise production and vocals that sound strangely Japanese at times (to my ears anyway) had me thinking of Area 51, along with the expected bands such as Heavenly and Rhapsody. Fugatta aren’t doing anything new nor anything above and beyond the heroes of symphonic power metal, but they are more than talented enough to deliver an album that fans of this style of music should have no trouble finding something to like about. - Metalcrypt
