The talented drummer had recently completed a three-show run in Ohio with Dyerwulf before an unexpected medical emergency led to emergency brain surgery. His musical legacy will continue through an upcoming album the two had been working on together.
The metal community has lost a talented musician far too soon. Joseph Dingle, drummer for Tommy Stewart's Dyerwulf, has passed away at the age of 39 following an unexpected medical emergency that began shortly after the band completed a three-show run in Ohio.
Tommy Stewart shared the heartbreaking news in a personal statement, remembering Joseph as an exceptionally talented drummer and a genuinely good person who had a remarkable ability to connect with people wherever they went.
According to Stewart, the two had just returned from their Ohio shows when Joseph mentioned having a headache. On September 20, 2026, they stopped at a KFC in Corbin, Kentucky, before Stewart dropped Joseph off at his home. Within hours, Joseph was hospitalized in Gainesville, Georgia, and underwent emergency surgery for a brain tumor.
Joseph's condition took a devastating turn while he was in a coma, when he suffered a stroke. He ultimately passed away, leaving behind friends, family, fellow musicians, and a musical legacy that will continue to resonate through the recordings he made with Dyerwulf.
A Drummer Who Made Friends Everywhere

In his tribute, Stewart emphasized that Joseph's impact extended far beyond his abilities behind the drum kit.
Whether they were at a concert, a truck stop, or a hotel lobby, Joseph had a way of making friends wherever he went. Stewart recalled watching people connect with the drummer throughout their travels and performances, with fans frequently approaching the band to express their admiration for his playing.
One particularly memorable moment involved a fan who approached the merchandise table asking to purchase whatever Joseph had been playing. At the time, the band was still working on its new album, and there were no recordings available to sell.
It was a testament to the impression Joseph made on audiences, even while performing material that had yet to be released.
For Stewart, Joseph was more than the drummer in his band. He was a friend whose personality, talent, and presence made their time together meaningful both on and off the stage.
The Music Will Continue

Despite the devastating loss, Stewart has confirmed that he intends to finish the Dyerwulf album he and Joseph had been working on together.
Their recording process was unconventional. Stewart typically began by writing the drum charts and recording the percussion before adding the other instruments. Rather than rehearsing the songs together beforehand, Joseph would read the charts and perform the drum parts directly.
According to Stewart, Joseph had limited vision and required special lighting to help him read the charts positioned on a stand near his face. Despite that additional challenge, he was able to deliver the performances Stewart needed, demonstrating the dedication and musical ability that made him such an important part of the project.
Stewart revealed that several drum tracks had already been recorded, along with a collection of drum fills he had specifically asked Joseph to perform for future use.
Those recordings now carry an even greater significance.
Stewart has made it clear that he plans to continue working with the material and complete the album, believing that is what Joseph would have wanted. The upcoming record will preserve performances captured while the two musicians were creating something together, allowing Joseph's playing to reach listeners long after his passing.
Joseph also played on Dyerwulf's song "My Politics Are My Own," giving listeners an opportunity to hear his work while the band prepares to complete its next chapter.
Gone Far Too Soon

Joseph Dingle was just 39 years old. His sudden passing is a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change, even when someone appears to be carrying on with everyday life and doing what they love.
For those who knew him personally, the loss is immeasurable. For the musicians and fans who encountered him through Dyerwulf, his performances and the memories he helped create will remain part of his legacy.
Stewart's words reflect the shock of losing someone who had recently been traveling, playing shows, and working toward the release of new music. There was no indication, from the account he shared, of how dramatically things would change in such a short period.
The album they were building together now represents more than another release in Dyerwulf's catalog. It is a collection of performances from a musician whose work, friendship, and passion left a lasting impression on the person creating it alongside him.

More than a standalone single, “Call Of The Wild” represents a pivotal chapter in the conceptual world Jumpscare have been developing across their recent material. The production reflects the band's continued evolution. Simone Pietroforte handled mixing and mastering at Divergent Studios in Bari , with credits including Distant and Sign Of The Swarm, while Sebastiano Di Martino handled guitar and vocal production at SDM Recording Studio , with credits including Moscow Death Brigade and Siberian Meat Grinder. Drums and bass were recorded at Vault Lab , making the track another production rooted entirely in Southern Italy.
The visual world surrounding “Call Of The Wild” is equally important. Jumpscare continue to reveal their forthcoming album's story piece by piece through individual songs, lyrics and videos rather than revealing the entire concept at once. The official video once again features a collaboration with Horizon Productions , further strengthening the cinematic identity of this new era.

Black Metal Project Led by Andrew Steven Brown Returns to Its Rawest Roots With New Single “What Sage Could Not Cleanse”

Vesperian has officially welcomed The Mosaic Window , the black metal project of multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Andrew Steven Brown , to its roster. The signing arrives alongside the release of the project's new single, “What Sage Could Not Cleanse,” which serves as the first preview of the forthcoming studio album Answered Prayers , due November 13, 2026.
With Answered Prayers , The Mosaic Window takes a deliberate step away from the more polished, progressive approach heard on 2024's Hemasanctum , returning instead to the project's original foundation of first and second wave black metal.
The result is described as a rawer and more stripped-down expression of the project, built around atmospheric rasps of despair, buried death growls, and an intentionally unpolished sense of darkness.
At the heart of Answered Prayers is a bleak nihilistic concept. Across ten tracks, the album explores a world in which humanity is erased retroactively, centuries before the Industrial Revolution, presented as the only possible cure for a poisoned world.
It is a concept that fits naturally with The Mosaic Window's increasingly bleak musical identity.
“What Sage Could Not Cleanse”

The newly released “What Sage Could Not Cleanse” offers the first glimpse into this return to the project's roots.
An older composition revived for Answered Prayers , the track represents the direction Brown wanted to take with the new record. Raw, atmospheric, and stripped of unnecessary polish, it establishes the album's central philosophy: some things cannot be purified once they have already crossed the point of no return.
Rather than chasing a modernized or overly polished interpretation of black metal, The Mosaic Window embraces the genre's darker traditions, allowing atmosphere, aggression, and bleakness to carry the weight.

A Return to the Beginning

Answered Prayers follows a progression that has seen The Mosaic Window evolve across three previous releases.
Brown first introduced the project with the Hollow EP in 2021, followed by the full-length Plight of Acceptance in 2023. The 2024 album Hemasanctum expanded the project's sound into a more progressive death/black metal hybrid.
With Answered Prayers , Brown is intentionally looking backward rather than forward, returning to the raw black metal foundation that originally shaped The Mosaic Window.
The album features Brown handling all instruments and vocals , with Dmitry Kim , known for his work with Jinjer and other projects, contributing session drums.
Production duties were handled by Alex Sedin of Ghostalgy Productions , who mixed and mastered the album. The cover artwork comes from Luciana Nedelea , whose work has also appeared on releases from Mare Cognitum , Sepulchral Curse , and others.
The Mosaic Window

The Mosaic Window remains a one-person black metal project centered entirely around Andrew Steven Brown, allowing the project's musical and conceptual direction to remain firmly under his control.
The upcoming Answered Prayers continues that approach while stripping away much of the polish of its predecessor in favor of something harsher, colder, and more rooted in the foundations of the genre.
For listeners drawn to the atmosphere and uncompromising spirit of early black metal, Answered Prayers looks to be a significant return to form for the project, while “What Sage Could Not Cleanse” provides the first dark glimpse into what awaits in November.
Answered Prayers will be released November 13, 2026 via Vesperian .

Texas thrash metal cult legends Gammacide are bringing their long-awaited comeback album to vinyl. The vinyl edition will be available as a limited-edition toxic neon-green pressing , with an even more limited "Blood Moon" red/black swirl vinyl edition available directly through NoLifeTilMetal Records. For longtime followers of the Texas underground and collectors of classic thrash, this marks a fitting physical release for one of the year's most unlikely and ferocious metal comebacks.
Toxic Mercenaries delivers eight brand-new tracks that prove Gammacide's trademark attack has lost none of its bite. Blistering riffs, chaotic lead work, bulldozing drums and Varnam Ponville's unmistakable vocals tear through songs including "Overload," "Sinkhole," "Predator Or Prey" and "Soldier of Fear."
The album follows Gammacide's triumphant return to the stage in 2025, when the band reunited to perform at Hell's Heroes Festival in Houston, Texas . The response was overwhelming, leading to an East Coast tour, shows in Mexico and, ultimately, the decision to enter the studio in January 2026 and create the first new Gammacide music since the band's breakup in 1992.
FROM TEXAS THRASH CULT HEROES TO A 35-YEAR COMEBACK

Formed in 1986 by guitarist Rick Perry and bassist Eric Roy , Gammacide quickly established themselves as one of the most vicious young bands emerging from the Texas metal scene. Their 1987 five-song demo became a prized release throughout the international tape-trading and fanzine underground.
With guitarist Scott Shelby joining the lineup in 1988, Gammacide developed the dual-guitar assault that would define their sound. The band recorded Victims of Science at Sound Logic Studios in Dallas in 1989, with the album released by Wild Rags Records in early 1990.
More than three decades later, Victims of Science remains a cult favorite among underground thrash devotees.
Now, Toxic Mercenaries carries that legacy forward without attempting to recreate the past. The new material sounds like Gammacide, because it is Gammacide: fast, hostile, chaotic and unapologetically rooted in the Texas thrash tradition.

Toxic Mercenaries arrives October 30 on vinyl through NoLifeTilMetal Records , giving fans the opportunity to add Gammacide's historic comeback album to their physical collection.

Heavy metal outfit Portals of the Tomb Guard officially open the gates to a world where death is only the beginning with the release of their new full-length album, Seasons of Hell , available now.
Built around heavy metal foundations and a sprawling conceptual mythology, Seasons of Hell takes listeners deep into the strange and sinister world of Kurio , the curious one who serves as the central figure throughout the band's evolving narrative. Through Kurio's journey, Portals of the Tomb Guard explores the darker corridors of human existence, the afterlife, demonic realms, rebellion against corrupt powers, and the mysterious forces responsible for designing and shaping worlds beyond our own.


“Kurio is everywhere.”


The origins of Portals of the Tomb Guard began simply enough. What started as a group of musicians meeting every week to jam for fun gradually developed into the possibility of creating something much larger. Drummer, guitarist, vocalist, and longtime musician Morgan Heck joined forces with Steven Eddie , whose background and conceptual approach helped establish the project's lyrical and musical direction.
When Eddie and Heck entered the studio, the project initially evolved under two separate identities, Portals of the Damned and Tomb Guard . As the music and mythology continued to develop, the two entities eventually merged into one, giving birth to Portals of the Tomb Guard .
At the heart of that evolution was Kurio.
Curious and relentless, Kurio travels through a world filled with darkness, confronting the Kings of Theron , figures representing selfish rulers and established powers, while experiencing concepts surrounding death, the demonic world and realities beyond the known. His journey eventually leads toward the mysterious Inbetwixt , entities gifted with the ability to understand and conquer the puzzles of existence, becoming builders of puzzles and ultimately builders of worlds.
Seasons of Hell serves as another chapter in that expanding universe.
With Steven Eddie handling vocals and guitars, Morgan Heck contributing drums, vocals and guitars, David Lammons on bass, and Cameron Brown on keyboards, Portals of the Tomb Guard combine a traditional heavy metal foundation with theatrical darkness and a growing conceptual narrative.
The album was produced and recorded by Steven Eddie at Hard Wall Studios / Bee Cave Records , with mixing and mastering handled by Rick Greenwood of Geneva Post Audio .
And this chapter is far from the end.
With the band's lineup now established and a new project already underway, Portals of the Tomb Guard are preparing to delve even deeper into the world of Kurio, expanding the mythology and continuing the journey through the realms that exist beyond the familiar.

Houston Doom, Stoner, and Sludge Quartet Continues the Road to Altars With Another Dose of Riff-Driven Destruction

Houston, Texas heavy quartet Direlands have officially unleashed their crushing new single “Leviathan,” the latest chapter in the band’s ongoing campaign toward their forthcoming full-length album, Altars , due January 20, 2027.
Built from the weight and atmosphere of doom, the grit of Gulf Coast sludge, and the muscular attack of stoner metal, “Leviathan” further establishes the sound Direlands have been developing throughout their recent releases. Massive riffs, dynamic songwriting, and a sense of scale give the track the feeling of a soundtrack to a world already collapsing around it.

“Leviathan” follows the release of “The Wizard” on August 26 and marks the second scheduled chapter in Direlands' carefully planned rollout for Altars . Built as a collection of seven bleak and cinematic parables, Black Pastoral explores drought, doubt, suffering, faith and the strange places where mercy and despair collide. Its songs travel through dust roads, drowned fields, shuttered churches and lonely highways, creating a landscape where religion has not necessarily disappeared, but whatever answers once came from above have long since stopped arriving.
This is not simply an album about darkness. It is about what remains when people continue praying after the answers have stopped.
Across Black Pastoral , LORDIAN presents a world where healing does not necessarily mean salvation. Suffering is passed from one body to another, buried in the soil or carried by the beasts. A dying dog sings beneath the wheel of dawn. A wandering healer breaks a fever only to leave fields filled with dead cattle. Christ crosses an American desert on foot and shares a warm beer with the Devil beside a dying gas station, two figures seemingly forgotten by the world around them.
The result is slow, heavy and cinematic, with the weight of doom meeting the rawness of blues, dark Americana and gospel music stripped of its comfort.

Chance and Alice Gawlinski talk DIY doom, overcoming fear, the strange story behind Mothertomb, and finding freedom through music

There are plenty of ways a band can form. Some musicians meet through other bands, some answer an ad looking for members, and others spend years searching for the right lineup.
For Northern Michigan doom/sludge outfit Mothertomb , it started with a broken boiler.
That unlikely chain of events eventually brought Chance and Alice Gawlinski together with drummer Mike, leading to a completely DIY project that has now made a serious impact on the underground. Following the release of their debut album Dying to Live , Mothertomb landed at #5 on the monthly Doom Charts , putting the Northern Michigan outfit alongside some of the biggest names in the underground doom and heavy music scene.
During a recent appearance on The Zach Moonshine Show , Chance and Alice sat down to talk about the band's unusual beginnings, their DIY approach, musical influences, Alice's journey from severe performance anxiety to embracing the stage, and what it has been like watching their music reach listeners around the world.
IT ALL STARTED WITH A BROKEN BOILER

Mothertomb's origin story sounds almost too perfect for a doom metal band.
Chance explained that when the boiler in their house went out, a repairman named Mike came by to take care of it. While working around the house, Mike noticed the collection of albums covering the walls of Chance's garage.
The two started talking about music.
Then came the revelation that Mike was a drummer.
Chance was a guitar player.
A jam session followed, and Mothertomb began to take shape.


"We got together, we kicked out a couple jams and the rest is history from there."


It's one of those completely random moments that could have easily gone nowhere. Instead, it became the foundation for a band that would eventually attract attention far beyond their home state.
DIY FROM THE GROUND UP

One of the most impressive aspects of Mothertomb's story is just how much of their music was created without relying on outside machinery.
The band recorded their album in a converted garage that became their home studio. Alice handled the artwork herself, while also writing the lyrics and developing the vocal melodies.
Then came the reaction from the underground.
Landing at #5 on the Doom Charts was a major milestone for a band operating almost entirely on its own terms.
Chance summed up the experience perfectly:


"We're just four people up in rural northern Michigan, man. We made that whole album ourselves out of a garage turned into a home studio. So super humbling that we got that reception just given how DIY everything was."


For Mothertomb, the DIY approach isn't simply a budgetary necessity. It's part of the band's identity.
Alice explained that doing things yourself can sometimes produce something more personal and unexpected than outsourcing every part of the creative process.


"You never know what you can do until you put yourself in that position where it's like, well, what if we couldn't outsource it and we had to do this thing?"


That philosophy runs through everything Mothertomb creates.
FROM REHEARSING IN THE DARK TO OWNING THE STAGE

Perhaps the most compelling part of the conversation was Alice's story of overcoming her fear of performing.
When Mothertomb first began rehearsing, Alice struggled with severe performance anxiety. So much so that the band would literally rehearse with the lights turned off because she didn't want the other members watching her.
Chance remembers those early rehearsals.


"When we would get together to rehearse, she didn't even want us to be able to see her. So we would actually have to practice in the dark with the lights off because she just didn't like the idea of being exposed."


But something changed once the music started.
Once Alice felt free enough to let go, the voice was there.
That confidence eventually carried over to the stage.
Alice admitted that before playing her first shows, she wasn't even sure she would enjoy performing.
Then she discovered something completely different.


"Well, we performed and I was like, 'Holy shit, that was amazing.' It just totally unlocked a whole 'nother level for me and I absolutely love performing now."


What began as fear ultimately became one of the most fulfilling parts of the project.
Alice described the transformation as a matter of challenging the limitations she had placed on herself.


"I really can write songs. I really can sing them. I really can actually do this. Like, why the hell not?"


That attitude seems to fit Mothertomb perfectly.
FINDING THEIR SOUND IN THE DARK

Mothertomb's music draws from a wide range of influences, including classic rock, 60s and 70s psychedelia, doom metal, Alice Cooper, and Type O Negative.
For Chance, some of those influences go back much further.
As a kid, he was exposed to the Satanic Panic-era propaganda surrounding rock and heavy metal. His mother even showed him the VHS Hell's Bells: The Dangers of Rock 'n' Roll , intended to warn children about the supposed dangers of heavy music.
Instead, it had exactly the opposite effect.
The tape featured AC/DC's "Hell's Bells."
Chance heard it.
And he was hooked.


"What was intended to scare me away from it actually turned me on to it."


Decades later, those early influences have found their way into a sound that balances heaviness with atmosphere, groove and psychedelic darkness.
Alice pointed specifically to Type O Negative's October Rust as an important influence on the band's approach to creating atmosphere.


"Creating an atmosphere is really important to us."


That emphasis on atmosphere is a major part of what gives Mothertomb their identity. Their music isn't simply about being heavy. It's about creating a world for the listener to enter.
MORE THAN GENRES AND LABELS

Another interesting part of the conversation went beyond music itself.
Alice discussed the tendency people have to place themselves into rigid categories and then allow those labels to determine what they believe they can or cannot do.
For her, Mothertomb became another opportunity to challenge those assumptions.


"Sometimes we get so locked in on labels that we deny ourselves experiences that could actually reveal something different."


It's a fitting philosophy for a band that itself refuses to be confined to one narrow box.
Doom, sludge, classic rock, psychedelia, gothic atmosphere and heavy metal all have a place in the Mothertomb universe.
THE WORLD IS LISTENING

Mothertomb's rise isn't limited to Northern Michigan.
The band has begun seeing listeners from around the world, including a growing audience in Europe.
Alice spoke about the unique relationship European audiences have with heavy metal and the sense of independence she sees in the way fans discover and support music there.


"One thing that I really appreciate about the European culture is that they decide for themselves what they want to listen to and what they like."


For an independent band creating music from a garage in rural Northern Michigan, reaching those listeners is a pretty remarkable development.
And perhaps that's what makes Mothertomb's story so compelling.
There was no major label machine behind Dying to Live . No massive recording facility. No carefully manufactured origin story.
There was a broken boiler.
A garage.
A collection of records.
A drummer who happened to notice them.
Four musicians willing to create something themselves.
And a willingness to push past fear and see what might happen.
The result is Mothertomb , a band that has gone from DIY rehearsals in the darkness to a #5 Doom Charts finish and an expanding audience beyond their home state and across international borders.
If Dying to Live is any indication, Mothertomb's story is only getting started.

“After Living Just for Dying I wanted a real departure, to lean all the way into the blackened side for a whole album, the way I first did on ‘Tomorrow Never Dies.’ The influences run wide, classical, industrial, 90s alternative, and the whole thing took a year to conceptualize and come together. It's the furthest I've pushed Wizard Tattoo.”

“This started as an attempt to make something different. Not black metal, not doom, not progressive, but something else entirely. Accompanied by an official music video, “I’m Coming Home” introduces Billing’s solo sound with a powerful, riff-driven statement inspired by the country he calls home. Rather than presenting a polished postcard image of Australia, the song embraces the full experience of the continent, from its rugged beauty and ancient landscapes to its unforgiving climate and dangerous wildlife.
Fire, flood, brutal heat and breathtaking scenery all become part of the song’s identity, creating a musical love letter to a land defined as much by its extremes as its beauty.
At the heart of “I’m Coming Home” is a massive rocking chorus built around the mysterious opening riff that first sparked the song’s creation. For Billing, the music itself immediately suggested the story he wanted to tell.

Founded in Tampere in 2011, Egokills have released three previous albums and performed across 13 countries, developing a reputation for combining multi-layered alternative metal with hard-hitting heavy rock. Now, after years of writing, rehearsing, performing and building a new foundation, the band sees 2026 as a turning point.
Brainbanger is the result.
Driven by the chemistry of four musicians playing together in the same room, the album embraces the raw energy and physicality of traditional rock recording while drawing heavily from the metal and rock sounds of the 1990s. Rough around the edges by design, Brainbanger captures Egokills at their most direct, energetic and confident.

The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Juha Nevala , whose work with artists including Somehow Jo and Huora reflects a focus on capturing the authentic sound and character of a band. Recording took place at Lammaskallion Audio, Studio Pinni and Jii-Studio , with mastering handled by Jaakko Viitälahde at Virtalähde Mastering .
For Egokills, the recording process was about getting away from the distractions of everyday life and focusing on the music.
“It was definitely the right choice to retreat to this countryside studio away from normal life. We were able to focus better than ever before and we had fun,” explains guitarist Niko Viita-aho .
Another major change in the band's evolution came in 2024, when Egokills officially became a four-piece after years of experimenting with different lineups. The new lineup also brought a significant change to the band's frontman. Vocalist Janne Selo picked up the guitar, helping open a new creative chapter for Egokills.
“When I started playing, I instantly felt about twenty years younger. Then the songs started flowing,” Selo says.
That renewed creative energy can be heard throughout Brainbanger , an album rooted in honesty, confidence and the search for light in a world that can often feel overwhelmingly dark. The band's lyrics explore themes of keeping an open mind, building confidence through honesty and finding that pale light, whether it is real or not.
Musically, Egokills draw from the intensity of classic heavy metal and hard rock while retaining the alternative edge that has shaped the band's identity. The result is a record built for loud speakers, turned-up amplifiers and live rooms.
And after years of preparation, Egokills are ready to bring Brainbanger home.

Today, the band has unleashed “Scourge Awakened,” the first single from its upcoming second full-length album, The Hammer of Conquest , through an exclusive premiere with No Clean Singing .
Written by Islander , the No Clean Singing premiere welcomes Sinistrum to the publication's pages for the first time and describes “Scourge Awakened” as a “pulse-pounding, soul-shuddering, and quite quickly addictive sign of what The Hammer of Conquest brings to the table.”

Originally forged by members of Kentucky's extreme metal underground, Sinistrum features lead vocalist and drummer Scott Briggs , guitarist and vocalist Timmie Ball , guitarist and vocalist Matthew Smith , and bassist Mike May . The lineup brings years of experience from acts including Fornicus and Kentucky death metal veterans Abominant , combining old-school heaviness with a vicious blackened edge.
Sinistrum first emerged in 2022 with the three-song demo/EP Trichotomy of Death . The band followed it with its debut full-length, Infernal Dawn , released in February 2024 through Adirondack Black Mass and Morbid and Miserable Records .
Following lineup changes, the band regrouped with Matthew Smith joining on guitar and vocals while Scott Briggs took over drum duties in addition to continuing as the band's lead vocalist.
Over the following two years, Sinistrum meticulously crafted The Hammer of Conquest , taking the foundation established on Infernal Dawn and pushing it further into darker and more extreme territory.
The result is an album forged in chaos, darkness, violence, and relentless riff-driven aggression , bringing together the crushing weight of death metal with the cold savagery of black metal and the raw energy of thrash.
“Scourge Awakened” immediately throws the listener into that sonic world, exploding into a barrage of hammering drums, aggressive tremolo-picked guitars, savage vocals, and tightly locked riffing before shifting into heavier groove-driven passages and blazing guitar solos.

VENOM Frontman, Bassist and Creative Force Behind Some of Extreme Metal's Most Influential Records Has Passed Away

Heavy metal has lost one of its most important and unmistakable figures.
Conrad “Cronos” Lant, the legendary vocalist and bassist of VENOM, has passed away.
VENOM announced the news today in a statement to the band's Legions around the world, describing the loss as one felt deeply throughout the VENOM family. Cronos' son, Nathan, also shared a message thanking fans for the support they had given his father throughout the years.


“He has laid down his soul, and his music will live on. The legend of Cronos will never die.”


For generations of metal musicians and fans, those words carry enormous weight.
Because the music Cronos helped create is not going anywhere.
THE SOUND THAT CHANGED THE DIRECTION OF METAL

VENOM formed in Newcastle, England, in 1978 and eventually settled into the classic lineup of Conrad “Cronos” Lant on vocals and bass, Jeff “Mantas” Dunn on guitar and Tony “Abaddon” Bray on drums.
Together, they created a sound that pushed heavy metal toward something faster, harsher and more extreme.
Their 1981 debut album, Welcome to Hell, immediately established VENOM as something very different from the polished hard rock and heavy metal dominating much of the era.
Then came Black Metal in 1982.
The album's title would eventually become the name of an entire genre.
VENOM's music became a major influence on the development of black metal, while the band's aggressive approach also helped pave the way for the rise of thrash and later extreme metal. AllMusic describes VENOM's influence on the subsequent thrash scene and notes that Black Metal ultimately lent its name to the genre.
That is an extraordinary legacy for any band.
And Cronos was at the center of it.
WELCOME TO HELL

VENOM's first four studio albums with the classic trio remain central to the band's history:
Welcome to Hell — 1981
Black Metal — 1982
At War With Satan — 1984
Possessed — 1985
Those records helped establish the foundation for the band's reputation and influence.
The music was raw and aggressive. The production was abrasive. The imagery was deliberately dark and provocative. VENOM didn't sound like a band interested in smoothing off the rough edges.
That approach resonated with musicians who were looking for something heavier.
Cronos' bass and unmistakable vocals became a defining part of that sound.
His voice wasn't designed to be pretty.
It was designed to be heard.
And decades later, it still is.
A NAME THAT BECAME A GENRE

There are few moments in music history where a band's album title becomes the name of an entire musical movement.
Black Metal was one of those moments.
The influence of VENOM's early work spread throughout the underground metal world, particularly among musicians who would go on to develop the first waves of black metal and other forms of extreme metal.
Cronos himself later discussed the impact of VENOM on the emerging Norwegian black metal scene, including bands such as Mayhem and Burzum, and reflected on how hearing that music helped him reconsider what VENOM represented.
The influence wasn't limited to black metal.
VENOM's music became an important part of the lineage leading into thrash metal as well. Metal bands that followed took elements of VENOM's speed, aggression and attitude and pushed them in their own directions.
Metallica, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Mayhem and Behemoth are among the bands and artists that have been associated with VENOM's influence.
That chain of influence continues to this day.
CRONOS KEPT THE FIRE BURNING

VENOM's history was complicated.
There were lineup changes, periods of separation and different incarnations of the band over the decades. But Cronos remained the central figure in the version of VENOM that continued recording and performing into the modern era.
In 2026, VENOM released Into Oblivion, the band's sixteenth studio album.
Cronos remained heavily involved in the record, handling vocals and bass while also receiving songwriting and arrangement credits. Official album information also credits him as producer and composer on tracks from the record.
The album arrived more than four decades after Welcome to Hell.
That alone says something about the endurance of the music.
While entire musical movements rose and fell around him, Cronos continued making VENOM records.
As recently as August 2026, Louder published a feature interview with Cronos discussing his life, music and the release of Into Oblivion.
Now, only weeks later, that interview becomes part of his final chapter.
MORE THAN A VOICE

Cronos' contribution to VENOM went beyond performing.
He was involved in the band's songwriting and creative direction, and his work extended into the visual identity surrounding VENOM as well.
The band's imagery became just as recognizable as its music, helping establish the dark aesthetic that would become deeply associated with extreme metal.
On Into Oblivion, Cronos is officially credited with bass, vocals, songwriting, lyrics and arrangements.
That creative involvement stretched across decades.
He wasn't simply the person standing behind the microphone.
He was one of the people who helped define what VENOM was.
THE LEGACY OF CRONOS

It is difficult to measure the influence of a musician solely through record sales, chart positions or awards.
Sometimes the better measurement is what happens afterward.
How many bands formed because somebody heard Black Metal?
How many guitarists picked up an instrument after discovering Welcome to Hell?
How many musicians decided they wanted to make something heavier, darker and more extreme?
That's where Cronos' legacy becomes enormous.
VENOM helped show musicians that heavy metal didn't have to remain within established boundaries.
It could become something uglier.
Something faster.
Something more extreme.
Something completely its own.
The generations that followed took that idea and ran with it.
Black metal.
Thrash metal.
Death metal.
Extreme metal in countless forms.
The music evolved, but the fingerprints of VENOM remained.
And at the center of those early recordings was Cronos.
THE LEGION CARRIES ON

In its announcement, VENOM thanked the Legions who supported the band through the decades.
Those fans are an important part of the story.
They bought the records.
They went to the shows.
They wore the shirts.
They passed the music to their friends.
They formed bands.
They introduced another generation to VENOM.
That's how heavy metal survives.
Not because the musicians live forever, but because the music keeps getting passed down.
A kid discovers Black Metal decades after its release.
That kid starts a band.
Someone hears that band.
They start another band.
The chain continues.
And somewhere in that chain, there will always be VENOM.
There will always be Cronos.

And he continued carrying that legacy forward until the very end of his career.
The man is gone.
The music isn't.
The records aren't.
The influence isn't.
