Review of Various Authors - Undead Tales Vol. I (Rymfire Ebooks) by Dave Wolff Available since June 2011, Undead Tales is an anthology of zombie fiction penned by eighteen contributing authors. What intrigues me about this, besides that I found the zombie genre at an impressionable period in my youth and that I am an avid enthusiast of horror and science fiction stories presented from a fan point of view is: with the authors and performers I have befriended these past years and their imagination the mystery of the zombie genre, especially its formative years, has managed to survive the mainstream’s capitalizations and attempts to create a slicker image of the lumbering reanimated creature to keep up with the ever-quickening bombardment of information presented us via television and the internet. The dazzle of mainstream fare now lies in its presentation of images spun faster in a single sitting that your brain can assimilate. In a way the masses are becoming zombies of a different sort due to this, but I digress. That people can still devise their take on the genre drawing inspiration from the classic era is an accomplishment deserving of recognition; one the befuddled general public would do well to take notice of. The twenty five stories allow you to connect with the imaginations of authors Rich Orth, Todd Sprague, Joe McKinney, JD Gillam and others who invent chilling situations with believable characters, all with their distinct styles. The formula is a direct contrast to the uniformity Hollywood attempted to create for the genre, that the hardcore fans mostly reject in favor of something that truly horrifies you in the slow, tension building style of Romero and Fulci.
